Wahroonga is a large and wealthy suburb found 18 kilometres northwest of Sydney's central business district, in the Upper North Shore. Featuring wide tree-lined avenues, some of the North Shore's finest homes and located conveniently adjacent to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Wahroonga is one of Sydney's most coveted suburbs.
Wahroonga is an aboriginal word meaning our home. Like many of its neighbouring suburbs, Wahroonga was a key timber supply district in the early years of European settlement. The opening of the North Shore railway line (which features a station in Wahroonga) in 1890 saw the area rapidly transformed into a residential one - with the elite often owning large garden estate weekender homes in Wahroonga.
The suburb features an impressive line-up of heritage-listed architecture including: the Rose Seidler House, open to the public as a museum at 69-71 Clissold Road; Berith Park, a Federation Queen Anne home on Billyard Avenue; and Highlands, on Highlands Avenue. While the area's main shopping precinct is largely found around Wahroonga train station, Sydney Adventist Hospital and expanses of bushland are located in the suburb's southwestern portion.
