Pennant Hills is a large commercial and residential suburb located 20 kilometres northwest of Sydney's central business district, in the Upper North Shore. Serving as one of the major commercial centres of the Hornsby Shire, the suburb's outer reaches are more residential and Pennant Hills is bookended by bush land and national park on its eastern and western sides.
Pennant Hills first served as a timber-sourcing district following European settlement, with its first permanent inhabitants arriving in the 1840s. The opening of the Northern railway line in the 1880s saw the area grow in population, but it developed most rapidly as a suburb of Sydney in the 1950s following widespread ownership of the motorcar.
A large shopping precinct is found adjacent to Pennant Hills train station, featuring Pennant Hills Market Place shopping mall, a Harris Farm Market, the Hotel Pennant Hills and a variety of car dealerships. The upper reaches of the Lane Cove National Park are found in the suburb's southeastern portion, while the lower reaches of the Berowra Valley National Park are found in Pennant Hills' northwestern pocket.
