St Ives is a large wealthy residential and commercial suburb found 18 kilometres north of Sydney's central business district, in the Upper North Shore. Neighbouring Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Garigal National Park, the suburb is resplendent in natural greenery and is well known for its large and handsome homes that line its well-manicured streets.
European settlers first explored the area that constitutes the suburb today in 1788. Originally a rural district, notable for its timber felling industry and fruit orchards, the suburb was slow to develop into a residential area, especially given that it has never featured a train station - the nearest stations are at Pymble and Killara. Following the Second World War, however, St Ives rapidly developed as a residential suburb, and is today considered one of Sydney's most affluent suburbs.
St Ives shopping village is found in the suburb's southern portion, on Mona Vale Road, adjacent to Pymble Golf Club. The suburb's built-up streets are largely residential and feature an impressive array of well-heeled homes. Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Garigal National Park fill much of St Ives' northeastern portions, and St Ives Showground is found in the suburb's northern reaches on Mona Vale Road.
