Thornleigh is a pleasant mixed-use suburb located 22 kilometres northwest of Sydney's central business district, in the Upper North Shore. The suburb is a mix of residential, commercial and industrial land. Its relatively high elevation affords it enviable views of the surrounding districts and bush land. Thornleigh is also home to the source of the Lane Cove River and features a train station on the Northern Line.
Thornleigh is named after Constable John Thorn, who, along with Constable Samuel Horne, captured a group of infamous bushrangers in the area in 1830. Thorn was granted landholdings in the district as a reward in 1838, which came to be known as Thornleigh. The suburb was best known for its fruit orchards in its early history following European settlement, with fruit grown at Thornleigh being exported as far as San Francisco and Vancouver. In the 1960s, Thornleigh was strongly considered as a site for Sydney's third university, but the suburb was eschewed in favour of Macquarie Park where Macquarie University is now located.
The upper reaches of the Lane Cove River are found on the suburb's southeastern border along with bushwalking trails that form a part of the Lane Cove National Park. Thornleigh's primary commercial shopping strip is found on the Cumberland Highway near Thornleigh Station, and includes its own Bunnings Store. The southern reaches of the Berowra Valley National Park are found adjacent to the suburb's southwestern portion.
