Hornsby is a large commercial and residential suburb found 23 kilometres northwest of Sydney's central business district, in the Upper North Shore. Serving as the busy commercial and administrative centre of the Hornsby Shire, the suburb features a wide range of local amenities, but also enjoys picturesque parcels of bush land in its western extremities.
Hornsby is named after convict-turned-constable Samuel Horne, who captured a pair of infamous bushrangers in the area in 1830, and was subsequently rewarded with local landholdings, which he named Hornsby Place. Hornsby is established on the traditional lands of the Kurringgai and Darug people - and there are over 200 known Aboriginal sites in the Hornsby Shire. The suburb's working class homes were originally concentrated around Hornsby railway station, while middle class homes were located further outwards and enjoyed enviable views of the surrounding districts.
Westfield Hornsby shopping centre and the suburb's large commercial precinct surrounds Hornsby railway station and is dissected by George Street. Hornsby Ku-ring-gai General Hospital is found in the suburb's eastern side on Palmerston Road. While the suburb's outer streets are largely residential, the western portion of Hornsby also contains a significant pocket of Berowra Valley National Park and is also where Hornsby Rifle Range is found.
