Pymble is a large residential and recreational suburb located 15 kilometres northwest of Sydney's central business district, in the Upper North Shore. Coveted for its family-friendly atmosphere, lush tree-lined streets, and close proximity to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Lane Cove National Park, Pymble is one of Sydney's well-heeled suburbs.
The suburb is named after Robert Pymble, one of Sydney's earliest European settlers, whose 1823 land grant comprised roughly half of present-day Pymble. In the early years of European settlement, the area was important as a major provider of timber, and later, agricultural produce - in fact, the oranges introduced to the area by Robert Pymble were considered of particular high quality. Pymble gradually transformed from a rural area to a suburban residential one in the late 1870s.
An impressive array of historical homes still stand in Pymble today, of particular note are: Grandview, built circa 1870; and Coppins also known as the Eric Pratten House, designed by Walter Burley Griffin - the American architect best known for designing the nation's capital, Canberra. The suburb features a small commercial shopping strip on Grandview Street adjacent to Pymble Train Station. Pymble Ladies' College, Avondale Golf Club and a variety of bushland walking trails are all found in the suburb's southwestern half.
