Turramurra is a small and mostly residential suburb located 16 kilometres northwest of Sydney's central business district, in the Upper North Shore. A neighbouring suburb to Saint Ives, and within close proximity to Lane Cove River bush land, golf courses and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, this leafy suburb is well loved for its handsome freestanding homes and plush streetscapes.
Turramurra is an Aboriginal word meaning big hill, high hill, high place or small watercourse. Topographically, the land between Pymble and Turramurra is relatively high compared to other surrounding suburbs. While European settlers originally referred to the area as Eastern Road, its current name was adopted when the suburb's railway station was opened in 1890. North Turramurra and South Turramurra became their own respective suburbs in 1994.
The suburb's main commercial shopping strip is found on Rohini Street, adjacent to Turramurra Train Station, as well as on the Pacific Highway, where Step Smart Podiatry Turramurra is found. The suburb's northern and southern portions are largely made up of residential streets, though the southwestern pocket also contains a large parcel of bush land, with a walking trail connecting Hobson Oval to Twin Creeks Reserve. Turramurra features a range of parks and other green spaces, and the outer roots of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park permeate the suburb's northern extremities.
