Which shoes are best for my feet?

How to pick the best shoes for my feet?

Picking the best shoes for your feet can sometimes seem like a hard choice! With so many options available, it can be hard to know what will bring you the most comfort and keep your feet happy and healthy in the long run.

Firstly, it’s important to distinguish between fashionable and everyday shoes. There is nothing wrong with fashionable shoes! You know the ones I’m talking about; high heels or little flat shoes. But its important to utilise these shoes as ‘sometimes’ shoes. These shoes tend to be tight around the foot, and also may push your toes into shapes that aren’t ‘natural’. Prolonged wearing of these shoes can cause foot pain, and in severe cases lead to long term foot problems such as bunions. It’s a good idea to try to think of ways to reduce the length of time you wear these fashionable shoes e.g. wearing everyday shoes on your commute to work, and switching for fashionable shoes once in the office.

Your everyday shoes should feel comfortable so that you are able to tackle your day without worry about foot pain or injury! The right shoes should:

  • cushion your foot
  • support your foot
  • feel comfortable
  • fit well

How to go about choosing the right shoe?

  • It’s a good idea to try on the new shoe at the end of the day or after some exercise. You will get a better idea straight away if this shoe will feel comfortable on your feet.
  • Check that you can wiggle your toes when the shoe is on. Remember we want your toes to have room to move freely.
  • Your shoes should feel comfortable as soon as your wear them. Shoes do not always ‘break in’ the way we wish!
  • Make sure the shoe cups your heel well. You shouldn’t feel your heel slipping around in the shoe.
